A RECENT EDUCATIONAL EQUITY WEBINAR BY THE UNIVERSITY OF PHOENIX DESCRIBED MINDFUL CONSUMERISM Can one engage in conscious consumption? In a recent webinar, the University of Phoenix Educational Equity Webinar Series discussed the idea and how to support people in continuing to be more deliberate with their spending in order to fit with their objectives and beliefs. The webinar was presented by Melia Dunn, founder and principal consultant at Melia Dunn Consulting, and was titled Mindful Consumerism: Applying Anti-Oppression Awareness to Year-End Spending. The webinar was intended to be a discussion that will help us frame how to shop, give, and donate at the end of the year so that we may put our money where our hearts are, according to Dunn.

Dunn is an expert in equity, diversity, and inclusion, and she helps businesses identify cultural impediments to diversity and inclusion within an organization by guiding them through cultural assessment. She also performs executive counseling to help leaders sharpen their efficacy in creating a diverse, inclusive organization, as well as workshops and training sessions to give teams tools for fostering true connection.

AT THE UNIVERSITY OF PHOENIX, ADVANCING EQUITY The Educational Equity Webinar series was started to provide a forum for crucial discussions about inclusion and equity. The webinars serve as a venue for thought leaders in diverse settings and promote cultural understanding. Prior webinars covered topics like code swapping, LatinX leadership, helping women advance in the corporate world, future challenges for equality, diversity, and inclusion, and leading inclusively in times of crisis, in addition to the discussion on conscious shopping.

The Office of Educational Equity at University of Phoenix, which sponsors the Educational Equity Webinar Series, encourages cultural understanding and thought leadership around issues of diversity and inclusion. It also forges connections with local and international organizations to advance cultural awareness and to provide populations underserved by traditional academia with access to resources and education. The office is committed to building a healthy community where everyone is accepted as well as to offering professional development for all students, alumni, professors, and staff.

In order to further diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives, the office collaborates with the Diversity Leadership Alliance (DLA), a national diversity education group. These initiatives help the DLAs mission promote more diverse workplaces, offer professional development opportunities, and support underrepresented students as they make the transition from high school to college or the workforce.

WHY OUR SPENDING PRECISION IS IMPORTANT WHEN IT COMES TO EQUALITY AND INCLUSION Shopping practices may appear to have little to do with diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives at first glance, but as the Mindful Consumerism webinar discussed, they can either reinforce already-existing racial and socioeconomic barriers or actively contribute to their removal. Which businesses and leaders profit from our spending depends on where we live. When we donate money to companies run by women, people of color, LGBTQ individuals, and people with disabilities, we are not only ensuring the success of those companies and founders, but we are also sending a message to the market that these are companies and founders worth supporting.

The decisions taken by major firms and the trajectory of the economy as a whole are greatly influenced by consumer spending. People are increasingly preferring to make socially responsible purchases, according to the ninth annual Conscious Consumer Spending Index . In fact, consumer expenditure on socially conscious products is at an all-time high and is up 25% from the previous year, shattering prior records. The pandemic seems to have rekindled said Heath Shackleford ‘s desire to live a purposeful life as the founder of Good.Must.Grow. The next step is to maintain and expand the momentum. According to the Index, 64% of Americans backed businesses that put their money into doing good. Furthermore, 36% of Americans said they would boost their annual spending on products and services with a social conscience.
